Annville, Pa. (May 4, 2013) - Alvernia (34-9) fell twice on day two of the Commonwealth Conference Championships at Lebanon Valley College to be eliminated from the tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders fell in the opener to Lebanon Valley (31-5-1) 4-3, and then lost to Stevenson (22-21) in the loser's bracket elimation game by a score of 4-3.
In the opener, Alvernia took a 3-0 lead with a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth.
Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) knocked in
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech) in the fourth who was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch.
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) brought in two more with a two-out double to left field in the fifth inning for the 3-0 lead.
The Dutchmen got four runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a three-run homerun. Alvernia loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the seventh, but a quick line-out double play, followed by a groundout ended the threat.
In the Crusaders' second game of the day they fell behind Stevenon 3-0 after the top of the third, but got all three back in their half of the third to tie the game.
Miranda Peto (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville), Penk, and Galanti all had RBI-singles in the third. The game remained knotted at three until the top of the ninth when the Mustangs managed a run on a single up the middle. Alvernia went hitless in their final at bats.
