BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (May 9, 2013) - Junior
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank. NJ/Marine Acad. Sci./Tech) and freshman
Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa./Christopher Dock) both went 2-for-2 as top-seeded Alvernia (35-9) defeated eighth-seeded Marywood (18-16) by a score of 7-0 Thursday afternoon in ECAC first round action. Senior pitcher
Deanna Dungee (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) went the distance for the complete-game shutout, allowing just five hits through seven innings.
The Crusaders jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a fielder's choice RBI from
Danielle Kitchen (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) that scored
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) who was hit by a pitch then stole second. Another run came across on a sacrifice fly from
Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown).
Alvernia added two more in the bottom of the third for the 4-0 lead. Penk walked to start the inning and Galanti followed with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt from Kitchen advanced both runners, and both came around to score on a single from Grim.
Penk widened the gap with a two-RBI single in the fourth, and
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) scored Alvernia's final run on a shallow sacrifice fly from Galanti.
With Thursday's win, Alvernia advances in the ECAC South Championships and will continue play in a four-team double elimination tournament at Alvernia beginning at 10am on Saturday.
