September 11th Remembrance Scheduled

Coach Bonewitz To Receive American Flag

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2013) – Alvernia University will hold a small ceremony before its Women's Soccer game versus King's on Wednesday evening to remember the lives lost in the September 11 attacks 12 years ago.  As part of the ceremony, an American Flag that was flown in a mission over Afghanistan earlier this year will be presented to head women's soccer coach and Vietnam Vet Bill Bonewitz.

Colonel Robert Mallets—father of Alvernia freshman Hannah Mallets--flew the flag on behalf of the 22nd Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron.  It flew onboard a KC-135R Stratotanker during a combat refueling mission on April 17, 2013.  That mission refueled an E-3 AWACS with 70,000 pounds of fuel.

Colonel Mallets has presented American Flags flown on Air Force missions to each of his three kids, his daughters' club soccer coach, and their high school coach.

As a member of a military family that transplants every three years, Hannah has already enjoyed soccer success around the nation.  She was named honorable mention AVCTL Division II in Wichita, Kansas.  Her high school team was a two-time Kansas 5A Regional Champion (2009 and 2010).  When the family was transferred to Beavercreek, Pa., Hannah enrolled at Mechanicsburg where the team advanced to the PIAA State semifinal.

Transition has been nothing new for the Mallets family.  In Hannah's lifetime the family has made a home near eight different military bases.  Hannah and her identical twin sister Emma, a defender at Walsh University, were born in Grand Forks, North Dakota.  After that it was on to Illinois then Kansas then Monterey, California.  From the west coach the family took its first international trip moving to Germany for three and a half years.

From Germany the family was sent back to Kansas then moved to Beavercreek before Hannah's junior year and just before the start of the college search.  While sister Emma chose Division II Walsh University, Hannah and her family were impressed with Coach Bonewitz and decided on Alvernia over Findley University in northern Ohio.

Both sisters have appeared in every game so far for their respective college teams.  Hannah—a midfielder—has one shot over four games and the Crusaders are off to a 3-1 start.  Emma has a pair of starts for the 2-0 Cavaliers.
