Maher Earns Shutout Mark As Crusaders Blank GMC, 1-0

McGrath Scores Fourth Straight

BOX SCORE

Lower Gwynedd, Pa. (Sept. 14, 2013) - Freshman Bri McGrath (Sicklerville, N.J./Winslow) scored her fourth career goal and fourth straight for the Crusaders, and senior goalie Colleen Maher (Wall, N.J./Wall Township) set the school record with her 14th career shutout as Alvernia University (5-1) defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College (0-5-1) 1-0 in overtime Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer match at Gwynedd-Mercy.

McGrath scored assisted by Laura Mauroschadt (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) just over three minutes into the extra frame.  The Crusaders have earned all five wins by shutout this season and to date have only given up two goals to Grove City this season.

The Griffins managed just three shots against the Crusaders' defense all day with all three coming in the first half.  Two were on net and both saved by Maher.  Alvernia ripped eight shots in the first half and nine more in the second, but GMC keeper Jess Tadley stopped all six that were on net.

"The back line led by Katie Hummel (Andreas, Pa./Tamaqua) and Kate Gill (State College, Pa./State College Area) owned possession in our defensive third all day," said Alvernia head coach Bill Bonewitz.  "Once again they were exceptional in front of Colleen."

The Crusaders scored on their first shot in overtime.  Mauroschadt led a breakaway and pulled the keeper out before she sent a cross to McGrath for the finish.

McGrath scored all three goals for Alvernia in a 3-0, mid-week win over King's College.  The Crusaders have now put together four straight shutouts.
