Clermont, Fl. (March 13, 2014) – The Crusaders ended their eight game stint at the National Training Center with their third split of the week. Alvernia University (5-3) suffered a 1-0 seventh inning loss to Ithaca College (8-0) before claiming a 4-2 win over the Sage Colleges (2-4).
In game one, Ithaca scored its lone run of the game as a result of Crusader errors. With no outs and a runner on first, Ithaca put down a sacrifice bunt. On the throw to first to get the batter, the Bombers brought the lead runner around to third. The throw by second baseman
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, N.J/Middletown South) was to the left of the bag, and the runner advanced towards home on the overthrow. Alvernia attempted to get the runner at home, however they were unable to record the out.
Prior to the seventh inning, both teams had a combined nine runners on base.
Despite the loss, junior
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) had a solid performance on the mound, allowing just five hits.
In game two, Sage struck first, posting two runs in the top of the second inning. However, the Gators lead was short lived. In the bottom half of the inning, with one out and runners on first and second, junior
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) cranked a three-run homerun over the left field fence. The Crusaders did not settle on the three runs though, and added another one in the third. Senior
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, N.J./Marine Acad. Of Sci/Tech) lead off the inning with a triple to right-center field. Two batters later, Galanti advanced home on an illegal pitch.
Wolfe picked up the win in her second performance of the day.
Alvernia will return home and will take to their field on Wednesday, March 19
th in a double header against Penn State Berks.
