Reading, Pa. (March 23, 2014) - The Crusaders bounced back from a game one loss to take game two and split the day with Stockton College (11-3). Alvernia University (8-4) defeated the Osprey 4-0 in game two after suffering a 3-2 loss in game one.
In game two, the Crusaders collected all four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ / Marine Acad. Of Sci/Tech) started the inning, reaching on an error by the second baseman.
Amanda Turner (New Hyde Park, NY / New Hyde Park Memorial High School) followed Galanti with a single, giving Alvernia runners on first and second with no outs. Sophomore
Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa. / Christopher Dock) kept the offense going, placing a bunt single down the first baseline. With bases loaded, first baseman
Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ / Williamstown) hit an RBI single to give the Crusaders their first run of the game.
Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa. / Governor Mifflin) followed suit, collecting 2 RBIs on a single up the middle to score Turner and Shilling. Grim would score Alvernia's fourth run two batters later on a bobbled ball at short off the bat of
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md. / Kent Island).
Four runs were more than enough for pitcher
Brittanie Wolfe(Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area), who gave up just eight hits from the mound. Wolfe picked up her fifth shutout and seventh win of the season.
In game one, Alvernia struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Galanti drew a full count walk to put a runner on for Turner, who launched her third homerun of the season to left field. However, the Osprey responded in the top of the fifth, putting up three runs of their own to take a 3-2 lead. The Crusaders were able to put a runner on in the seventh, but were unable to convert the run.
Wolfe took the loss on the mound in game one, allowing nine hits in seven innings of work.
Alvernia returns to action on Monday, taking on Albright College in Commonwealth Conference action.
