Alvernia Takes Two Against Albright

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Reading, Pa. (April 1, 2014) - Alvernia University (10-4, 2-0) pulled off two one-run victories to sweep cross town rival Albright College (3-10, 1-5) in Commonwealth Conference play on Tuesday.

Alvernia defeated the Lions 6-5 in game one and 1-0 in game two.

The Crusaders opened the scoring in game one, plating two runs in the bottom of the first. After senior Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md. / Kent Island) reached on a one-out walk, Amanda Turner (New Hyde Park, NY / New Hyde Park Memorial High School) and Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa. / Christopher Dock) ripped back to back doubles to put Alvernia up 2-0.
Alvernia struck again in the third when Turner's single to center brought Manowski around from second.

Albright responded in the fourth and the fifth, posting a run each inning to come within one of the Crusaders. However, Alvernia answered in the bottom of the fifth as Turner picked up her third RBI of the game when she hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ / Williamstown), who led off the inning with a single.

The Crusaders went up 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth as Brianna Kuhn (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown) crossed home on a single by Manowski.

In the seventh, the Lions took advantage of three Alvernia errors to tie the game at five and force play into extra innings.

The two teams exchanged outs until the tenth inning, which started international tiebreaker. After holding the Lions in the top of the inning, the Crusaders capitalized on Albright's error to take the win. With pinch runner Brianna DePriest (Bechtelsville, Pa. / Boyertown Area High School) on second, an error by Albright on Shilling's sacrifice bunt allowed DePriest to score the winning run.

Brittanie Wolfe(Pine Grove, Pa. / Pine Grove Area) earned the win on the mound, improving her records to 6-2.

In game two, Alvernia scored the only run it needed in the fifth.  Senior Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ / Middletown South) hit an infield single to deep short to plate sophomore Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa. / Governor Mifflin). Fritz had opened the inning with a single through the left side of the field.

Freshman Brianna Fisher (Erial, NJ / Timber Creek Regional) picked up the complete game shutout in game two, allowing just five hits in seven innings of work.

The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Messiah to continue Commonwealth Conference play.
