Sean Boyd (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) earned a tie-breaker win in the second set for the final point of the match as Alvernia University (8-7, 5-0) put together an impressive 5-4 win over Elizabethtown College (4-5, 2-1) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference men's tennis action at Governor Mifflin Courts snapping a 31-match conference win streak for the Jays.
Dennis Sult (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh) and Daniel Minnich (Palmyra, Pa./Lower Dauphin) set the tone at the outset with an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Both players won their singles matches and
Aaron Yuros (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) gave the Crusaders their fourth point with a straight-sets win at No. 3 singles. Sult went down 6-2 in the first set of his match at No. 1 singles then down 2-0 in the second set before running off an impressive 12 straight game wins for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 win.
Etown got two points in the doubles matches with wins at No. 2 and 3, then took the No. 4 and 5 singles matches to level the day at 4-4 with one match left on the courts.
Boyd won his first set 6-0 then fell behind 5-3 in the second set before rallying to force a tie-breaker which he won convincingly, 7-2.
The Crusaders complete the conference schedule at Messiah on Thursday.
