BOX SCORE 2 Frederick, Md. (April 12, 2014) – Alvernia University (15-9, 6-4) put together 22 hits and 19 runs in two games as the Crusaders won 11-0 and 8-3 to sweep Hood College (13-11, 1-7) in Commonwealth Conference play on Saturday.
In game one, Alvernia started its offense on a two out rally in the second inning. With
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ / Williamstown) on second, the Blazers made an error off the bat of
Brianna Kuhn (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown) which allowed McKenna to score. The Crusaders capitalized on the error, extending the inning with three consecutive hits.
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ / Marine Acad. Of Sci/Tech) and
Taylor Faust (Kutztown, Pa. / Kutztown Area) had back-to-back RBI doubles to right center, followed by an
Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa. / Christopher Dock) single up the middle, giving the Crusaders a 4-0 lead.
Alvernia put up three more runs in the third, again using a string of hits to produce runs. McKenna gave the Crusaders a baserunner for the second inning in a row, reaching on a fielder's choice.
Brianna DePriest (Bechtelsville, Pa. / Boyertown Area) then singled to right to move McKenna to third, setting up
Samantha Penk's (Lincroft, NJ / Middletown South) sacrifice fly to give the Crusaders their fifth run. Kuhn and Galanti came through again with two outs, each picking up an RBI as the lead extended to 7-0.
The Crusaders repeated things in the fourth, going up 10-0. Shilling led off the inning with a single to right, and quickly scored as
Amanda Turner (New Hyde Park, NY / New Hyde Park) launched a two-run home run to right center. Alvernia continued the inning by loading the bases off of a walk and two hit batters. Kuhn tacked on the Crusaders third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Turner went yard again in the fifth, putting Alvernia up 11-0.
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa. / Pine Grove Area) and
Alexa Banks (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy) gave up a combined four hits in five innings of work on the mound as Wolfe picked up her eighth win of the year.
In game two, the Blazers took an early lead, going ahead 2-0 in the first inning. However the Crusaders were not down for long, jumping ahead of Hood in the third. Penk led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Faust and Shilling used back-to-back RBI singles to tie things up at two. Alvernia then pulled ahead 4-2 on a base hit with an error off the bat of
Taylor Thomas (Williamstown, NJ / Gloucester County Institute of Tech).
The Crusaders and the Blazers exchanged runs in the fifth as Alvernia plated its only run of the inning on an RBI single by McKenna.
Up 5-3, the Crusaders put three more runs on the board in the sixth. With two outs and runners on first and second, Shilling ripped a two RBI single to right field. Turner followed Shilling with an RBI single of her own, putting Alvernia up 8-3.
Brianna Fisher (Erial, NJ / Timber Creek Regional) and Wolfe gave up a combined 10 hits in seven innings of work as Fisher picked up her fifth win of the year.
Alvernia takes to its home field on Tuesday in a non-conference double headers versus Immaculata University.
