BOX SCORE 2 Reading, Pa. (Apr. 17, 2014) - Alvernia University (17-9, 8-4) picked up 13 RBIs on the day to sweep Commonwealth Conference rival Lycoming (11-18, 4-10). The Crusaders defeated the Warriors 9-1 in five innings in game one before taking game two 5-2.
In game one, Alvernia put up all the runs it would need in the first three innings.
In the bottom of the first, Alvernia plated its first run. With two outs,
Amanda Turner (New Hyde Park, NY / New Hyde Park) singled to right field to plate
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ / Marine Acad. Of Sci/Tech), who led off the inning with an infield single.
The Crusaders continued to put runs on the board in the second, scoring five runs to take a 6-0 lead. After
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ / Williamstown) led off with a single to right, Alvernia capitalized on back-to-back Lycoming errors to plate its second run of the game. The Crusaders extended the inning after the errors, loading the bases with two outs.
Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa. / Christopher Dock) and Turner then put together back-to-back hits, picking up two RBIs a piece.
Lycoming scored its lone run of the game in the top of the third, using a Crusader error to put a runner on and scoring her on a double to right center.
Alvernia quickly answered, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. With two runners on,
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md. / Kent Island) tripled to center, plating both runners. Galanti followed Manowski with a single, giving the Crusaders a 9-1 lead.
The Crusaders would hold Lycoming for the next two innings, ending game one by way of the 8-run mercy rule.
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa. / Pine Grove Area) picked up the win on the mound in game one, limiting the Warriors to just two hits in her complete game performance.
In game two, the Crusaders struck first again, but this time not until the third inning. In the bottom of the third, senior
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ / Middletown South) led off the inning with a solo home run to center field. Manowski kept the offense going, reaching on a single and moving up to third after stealing second. Galanti plated Manowski on a double to right, giving Alvernia a 2-0 lead.
Alvernia picked up where it left off in the fourth, taking a 5-0 lead on a 3-run homerun by McKenna.
Lycoming closed in on the Crusaders in the fifth, taking advantage of Alvernia miscues. The Warriors used a timely hit to plate two runners, who reached on back-to-back infield errors, and cut the Crusader lead to 5-2.
However, the Crusaders held firm, limiting the Warriors to just one base runner over the next two innings.
Brianna Fisher (Erial, NJ / Timber Creek Regional) threw the complete game win in the circle, allowing just four hits.
Alvernia continues Commonwealth Conference play on Tuesday, traveling to Widener.
