BOX SCORE 2 Chester, Pa. (April 22, 2014) - Widener University (19-7, 9-5) swept a softball doubleheader from Alvernia University (17-11, 8-6) Tuesday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference play at Widener.
Widener held onto an 8-7 win in game two after taking a 7-0 victory in game one.
In game two, the Pride jumped ahead early, taking an 8-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Alvernia chipped away at the lead though, using the long ball to help generate runs. In the top of the third,
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ / Marine Acad. Of Sci/Tech) started the inning with a walk. Two batters later,
Amanda Turner (New Hyde Park, NY / New Hyde Park) hit a homerun to right center to cut down Widener's lead 8-2.
In the top of the fifth, Turner started the Crusader offense, leading off the inning with a single. With one out, Felecia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ / Williamstown) went yard, bringing Alvernia within four.
McKenna would get things going again in the seventh, opening the inning with her second homerun of the game. Down 8-5,
Brianna DePriest (Bechtelsville, Pa. / Boyertown Area) followed McKenna with a single, advancing to second on a Pride error.
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md. / Kent Island) used a single to give the Crusaders another base runner, leaving Alvernia with runners on first and third as the game fell into a rain delay.
Galanti was ready to go after returning from the delay, notching a double to right center to bring in both base runners, bringing Alvernia within one. Down 8-7 with a runner on second, the Crusaders experienced another delay, this time for lighting.
Upon Alvernia's return to play, it was unable to score the tying from second.
In game one, Widener's pitching staff allowed just for four hits for the shut out. The Crusaders had runners on in five of seven innings, but couldn't push across a run. Widener scored three runs in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth, and one run in the sixth.
Amanda Turner went 2-for-3 in the opener and
Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa. / Governor Mifflin) had a double.
The Crusaders return to play on Thursday against an opponent that is to be determined.
