Crusaders Finish Third At Commonwealth Championships

Arsenault Earns First Team

COMPLETE RESULTS

Hershey, Pa. (Apr. 27, 2014) - Sophomore Zach Arsenault (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) shot 9-over par 80 and finished with a two-day total 162 to earn First Team All-Commonwealth and lead Alvernia University to a 329 Sunday after a 330 on Saturday and third place out of 10 teams at the Commonwealth Conference Men's Golf Championships hosted by Hershey Country Club.

The Crusaders started on the par 5 1st on Sunday after opneing on the 10th on Saturday.  Arsenault made six bogies on the front with three pars to turn in 42.  He made back-nine bogies at 11, 12, and 15 and parred his final three holes to post 80.  His 162 total was good for a tie for fifth place.

Fellow sophomroe Brett Fernandes (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) also shot 80 on Sunday--six shots better than his 86 on Saturday.  Fernandes had a tough open with a double at the 1st and bogey at the 2nd.  He answered with four straight pars then three bogies to finish the front nine at 6-over 42.  He made double at 10 then played a six-hole stretch in 1-under with birdies at 13 and 15 before making bogey on the last two holes to post 80.  His 166 total put him in a tie for 17th place.

Junior Chris Van Natta (Easton, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) also shot 42 on the front nine with four bogies and a double.  He shot 1-under through the first four holes on the back with a birdie at 11, but made bogey on each of the last five holes to post 81.  He finished the two-day event at 165 in a tie for 12th.

Senior Bobby Ranken (Mount Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) was just a fraction off on Sunday pairing an 88 with his 78 from Saturday to shoot 166 and match Fernandes in the tie for 17th.  Putts that fell on Saturday were finding the lip on Sunday and leaving testers for bogey.  After a par-bogey start he made back-to-back doubles at 3 and 4 then bogied three of the last four to shoot 44 on the outward nine.  He started the back nine par-par, but then bogied four straight before a double and a triple.  He parred the last to shoot 88.

Junior R.J. Cummings (Moorestown, N.J./Bishop Eustace) posted a two-day 190 to finish 41st.

Messiah College shot a two-day 641 to win the team championship and the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Championships at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Austin Galaska shot 153 to earn Player of the Year honors.  He was the only player in the field to break 80 both days.  Only nine of the 98 weekend rounds were 79 or better.
