BOX SCORE 2 Reading, Pa. (April 5, 2014) - The Crusaders bounced back from a game one loss to take game two and split the day with Arcadia University (6-12, 3-3). Alvernia University (11-7, 3-3) defeated the Knights 7-1 in game two after suffering a 4-1 loss in game one.
In game two, Arcadia struck in the top of the first inning, posting a run to open the game. The Crusaders put runners on in the first and second innings, but tied things up in the third.
Amanda Turner (New Hyde Park, NY / New Hyde Park) singled up the middle to score
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ / Middletown South), who led off the inning reaching on an error.
The Crusaders struck again in the sixth inning, putting up six runs to take the 7-1 lead.
Turner started the offense for Alvernia, singling to left field.
Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa. / Christopher Dock) followed Turner with a hard ground ball to third, causing another Knight error. With runners on first and second,
Taylor Thomas (Williamstown, NJ / Gloucester County Institute of Tech) used an RBI single to score pinch runner Brianne DePriest (Bechtelsville, Pa. / Boyertown Area) and move Shilling to third. Another Arcadia error, forced off the bat of
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ / Williamstown), brought in Shilling, putting the Crusaders up 3-1.
Alvernia then used three hits in a row to tack on four more runs.
Brianna Kuhn (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown) ripped a double down the left field line to pick up two RBIs. Penk repeated Kuhn's hit with her own double, plating Kuhn. After Arcadia made a pitching change,
Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md. / Kent Island) picked up an RBI with a single to score Penk.
The Knights put two runners on in the top of the seventh, but were unable to score.
Freshman
Brianna Fisher (Erial, NJ / Timber Creek Regional) picked up in the win in the circle, allowing just eight hits in seven innings of work.
In game one, Arcadia scored first, taking an early 1-0 lead. The Knights added a second run in the third off of an Alvernia error.
Arcadia put up two more runs in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead, forcing the Crusaders to make a pitching change.
Alvernia posted their lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Kuhn worked a walk to put a runner on for the Crusaders. A fielder's choice by Penk moved Kuhn second, and a bunt single by Manowski moved her to third. Kuhn then scored on an error by the Knight's second baseman forced the bat of
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ / Marine Acad. Of Sci/Tech).
The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, hosting Stevenson in Commonwealth Conference play.
