Alvernia Splits With Stevenson

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2

Reading, Pa. (April 8, 2014) - The Crusaders used a game two win to split with Commonwealth Conference rival Stevenson University (12-13, 2-6) at Angelica Park on Tuesday. Alvernia University (12-8, 4-4) dropped game one 4-1 before taking game two 6-4.

In game one, the Mustangs went ahead early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Crusaders responded in the bottom of the second, cutting Stevenson's lead in half. With one out, Rachel Fritz (Kenhorst, Pa. / Governor Mifflin) singled down the left field line. Fritz was able to move up to second on a bunt by Taylor Thomas (Williamstown, NJ / Gloucester County Institute of Tech) and advanced to third on a Stevenson error. A follow up bunt by Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ / Williamstown) put the Crusaders on the board, plating Fritz and making it 2-1.

Stevenson tried to push its lead in the third, but Alvernia held them to one run. With runners on second and third, the Mustangs attempted to send both runners home on a hit to left field. While the first runner scored, the Crusaders stopped the trail runner as Fritz made the relay throw to Katie Manowski (Grasonville, Md. / Kent Island), who threw a bullet to Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ / Marine Acad. Of Sci/Tech) at home for the last out of the inning.

The Mustangs added a fourth run in the seventh to take the 4-1 victory.

Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa. / Pine Grove Area) suffered the loss on the mound, dropping to 6-6 on the season.

In game two, the Crusaders took the early lead, putting up three runs in the first inning. After McKenna led off the inning with a single, Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ / Middletown South) and Galanti were both hit by pitches to load the bases. McKenna then gave Alvernia its first run when she scored on a Mustang error on a pick-off attempt at third. Penk and Galanti each moved up on the error, which allowed both to score on Amanda Turner's (New Hyde Park, NY / New Hyde Park) single up the middle.

Alvernia put up another run in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Brianna Kuhn (Elizabethtown, Pa. / Elizabethtown) started the inning with a double and was moved over to third by McKenna. With two outs, Galanti hit a single through the left side of the field to score Kuhn.

The Crusaders would extend their lead again in the fifth, going ahead 6-0 on a two-run homerun by sophomore Aly Shilling (Blue Bell, Pa. / Christopher Dock).

Stevenson put up four runs in the top of the seventh to cut the Crusader lead to 6-4, however Alvernia was able to close out the inning for the win.

Brianna Fisher (Erial, NJ / Timber Creek Regional) picked up the win in the circle for Alvernia, her fourth of the season.

The Crusaders continue their season on Thursday as they travel to Desales for a non-conference doubleheader.
