BOX SCORE 2 Dallas, Pa. (May 10, 2014) – Alvernia University (23-15) picked up the necessary win against Arcadia University (21-23) to advance to the second day of play in the ECAC South tournament. The Crusaders took a 5-4 win over Arcadia after dropping game one 6-1 against McDaniel College (29-15).
In the second game, Arcadia put up runs first, using a three run homerun to take the lead in the top of the first. The Crusaders quickly squared things up with a three run blast of their own. After senior
Amanda Galanti (Red Bank, NJ / Marine Acad. Of Sci/Tech) started the innings with a single to left, senior
Samantha Penk (Lincroft, NJ / Middletown South) reached on a base hit to third. Both runners advanced an extra base when Penk's hit deflected off the third baseman's glove. With runners on second and third,
Shannon Grim (Williamstown, NJ / Williamstown) launched a shot to left center, tying the game at three.
Alvernia struck again in the third, posting two runs in the bottom of the inning. With Penk on second, Grim picked up her fourth RBI of the game on a single to left field. Grim advanced to third on a ground out by
Taylor Thomas (Williamstown, NJ / Gloucester County Institute of Tech) and was plated by
Felicia McKenna (Williamstown, NJ / Williamstown) on an RBI single to left to take the 5-3 lead.
Arcadia was able to cut the lead to 5-4 in the fourth, but could not catch up to the Crusaders.
Brianna Fisher (Erial, NJ / Timber Creek Regional) collected the win on the mound, allowing eight hits in seven innings of work.
In game one, the Crusaders attacked in the first, opening the game with a 1-0 lead. Galanti was hit by a pitch to start the game, and was advanced to second on a sacrifice by Penk. With two outs,
Amanda Turner (New Hyde Park, NY / New Hyde Park) ripped a single down the left field line, bringing in Galanti.
McDaniel answered back in the bottom of the inning, plating three to take a 3-1. The Green Terror added a run in the third and two more in the fifth to secure a 6-1 lead over the Crusaders.
Alvernia had runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but were unable to convert the run.
With the win over Arcadia, Alvernia advances to the semi-final game tomorrow at 10:00 am against Misericordia. The winner of the semi-final game will take on McDaniel at 12:00 pm in the final.
