BOX SCORE Reading, Pa. (May 2, 2014) – Fifth-seeded Arcadia University (20-19) earned a 5-2 win over #4 Alvernia University (18-13) Friday morning in game one of the Commonwealth Conference Softball Championships at Angelica Park.
The Knights move on to face top-seeded Messiah College in the 5-team, double-elimination tournament Friday afternoon in game three.
Alvernia opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when
Amanda Turner (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) launched a solo shot onto the batting tunnel beyond the left field fence.
Arcadia tied the game in the third on an RBI-single to center off the bat of senior Jess Wood. The Knights took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Erin Wilson helped her own cause with a hard-hit single to short. They tacked on two in the fifth on three straight doubles to lead 4-1.
Alvernia got a leadoff double from
Shannon Grim (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) who slid in just below the tag. Grim moved up on a bunt by Sam Penk (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) and scored on a
Brianna Kuhn (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) groundout.
Arcadia got the run back in the sixth when Sara Boyadjis ripped a two-out single to right to score Wilson.
Alvernia brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back one-out singles, but Wilson got out of the jam with a pop out to third and a groundout to short.
Grim led the offense for the Crusaders going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Brittanie Wolfe (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) gave up four runs on 10 hits over four and a third innings and took the loss.
