BOX SCORE York, Pa. (May 3, 2014) – Top-seeded Widener University (31-11) scored a walk-off win with a bases loaded single in the ninth for a 3-2 win over #2 Alvernia University (27-13) Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Commonwealth Conference Baseball Championships at Santander Stadium.
Alvernia scored the first run of the game when
Joe Iacobellis (Morganville, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) reached on an infield single in the third, moved up on a bunt from
Brok Martin (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) and scored on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat of
Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air).
Widener scored the tying run in the fourth on a two-out double then took a 2-1 lead with a manufactured run in the fifth.
Alvernia tied the score with an unearned run in the seventh.
Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) singled to left and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. He scored when Iacobellis hit a grounder that the pitcher threw away on the play to first.
Widener had a runner stranded at third in the eighth then had two batters hit by a pitch to load the bases for conference player of the year Mike Riverso who delivered with a ground ball single to second.
Widener takes its second conference title and gets the Commonwealth automatic qualifier into the NCAA Championships. Alvernia will await a possible at-large bid.
