Lower Merion, Pa. (Apr. 18, 2016) - Senior
Brett Fernandes and sophomore
Keith Noonan both shot 78-78 - 156 to finish in a tie for 38th place and lead Alvernia University to a 674 team total and 13th place out of 14 teams at the Finegan Invitational hosted by LaSalle University Monday at Philadelphia Country Club.
The Crusaders posted a round of 330 in the morning round and stood two strokes up on Bucknell University and 13 ahead of St. Francis University midway through the event. Bucknell came back with a 307 on the afternoon round while Alvernia fell back a bit with a 344. The Crusaders were able to clip one Division I team for the fourth time in as many years at the LaSalle Invitational.
Noonan--who started on the par 5 12th in both rounds--found himself on top of the leaderboard early in the day going 2-under through his first seven holes, but he struggled with the front nine going 7-over then finished bogey-bogey on 10 and 11 for his first of two 7-over 78s. Fernandes--who also started on 12--found himself 4-over through his first seven holes, but rebounded on the front with a pair of birdies and a 2-over 38 on the outward nine. He finished par-bogey in the morning round to shoot 78.
Noonan's afternoon round was similar with the sophomore going 1-over on his first seven holes before posting 41 on the front then finishing par-bogey for his second straight 78. Fernandes started hot in the second round rolling in birdies on two of his first three holes, but then played the next four holes in 5-over. This time he played the front nine in 4-over 40 and finished with a pair of pars for 78.
Sophomore
Cameron Cathcart posted the third best total for the Crusaders with three birdies as part of an opening round 85 then fell back a bit with a second round 94. Carl Stitt rounded out the counting scores for the Crusaders both rounds with an 89-94 day.
The Crusaders are back in action this weekend at the MAC Commonwealth Championships hosted by Hershey Country Club's East Course.
