BOX SCORE 2 Clermont, Fl. (Mar. 7, 2017) - Alvernia University (4-0) picked up a pair of wins on day two of their spring training schedule, topping Northwestern- St. Paul in game one, 10-1, and defeating Misercordia 7-5 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Crusaders pulled ahead to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Freshman
JoAnnah Lim started the day with a double, and advanced to third on a
Brianna DePriest single. A fielder's choice off the bat of
Morgan Petry brought around Lim, and DePriest crossed shortly after on a double by
Mckenzie Miessau. Miessau was plated moments later as
Sarah Bystrycki ripped a single up the middle.
Alvernia notched another pair of the runs in the second as DePriest stayed hot, ripping a solo shot for the 4-0 margin. The Crusaders collected their fifth of the day on back-to-back singles by Petry,
Amanda Turner, and Miessau.
Alvernia tacked on five more runs in the final frame to pull ahead 10-1. A string of singles by Bystrycki,
Emily Carmella, and
Morgan Psiuk notched the first run of the inning before a Lim single scored Carmella and Psiuk. DePriest followed suit, plating Lim, and Petry roped a double to bring around the final run.
Northwestern-St. Paul recorded its lone run in the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman
Riley Shields earned her first collegiate win on the mound, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts in four innings of work. Sophomore
Kayla Andrews picked up a pair of innings on the mound as well, surrendering two hits.
In the nightcap, Misericordia took to the board first with a solo homerun in the third. The Crusaders answered in the bottom half of the frame as DePriest brought around Psiuk, who reached on a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Lim.
The Cougars ripped another long ball in the fourth, collecting four more runs.
Trailing 5-1, Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the fourth. An
Analise Fouracre single between a pair of Misericordia errors loaded the bases for the Crusaders, who pushed across a run on a Psiuk fielder's choice.
Alvernia regained the lead in the fifth, pulling ahead 7-5. With Miessau and DePriest on first and second, a Cougar error off the bat of Bystrycki plated DePriest to cut the gap 5-3. Carmella followed with a rip to left center, bringing Alvernia within one with runners on second and third. Fouracre then collected her second single of the day, and an errant throw by Misericordia allowed both Miessau and Carmella to score for the 6-5 advantage.
Taylor Thomas tacked on an insurance run with a fielder's choice to second, heading into the sixth inning.
The Cougars threatened to come within one in the sixth, but a leaping catch over the fence by Psiuk maintained the two-run advantage.
Brittany Brown gathered the win on the mound, throwing 2 1/3 innings and holding the Cougars to three hits.
Taylor Fouracre tossed the final frame to close out the game.
Carmella, Psiuk and DePriest led the way offensively for Alvernia. Carmella finished the day 6-for-7, while Psiuk and DePriest each collected five hits.
The Crusaders take to the field again tomorrow at 9:00 am for their third double-header in three games. Alvernia opens with New England College, and then faces Moravian at 11:30.
