BOX SCORE 2 Reading, Pa. (Mar. 17, 2018) - The Golden Wolves and Penn State Berks went to extra innings in both games of a nonconference double header Saturday at Hintz Athletic Field.
Alvernia took game one 1-0 after eight innings and tied game two 5-5. Game two was called due to darkness after the ninth inning.
Riley Shields and Jessica Rozick were in a pitchers dual through 7 innings of work. The international tie breaker was put into the place going into the 8
th inning placing
JoAnnah Lim on 2
nd base to start the inning.
Emily Carmella executed a sacrifice bunt that advanced Lim to second base. After a walk to place runners on first and third, Shields stepped in and came through with a single down the right field line that would score Lim. That run hold would up through the bottom of eight to secure the win. Shields picks up her sixth win of the season and also went 3-2 at the plate.
In the second game, Alvernia capitalized on some early fielding miscues to score in the second inning.
Jocelyn Flores reached base by error on the first basemen before Lim would single to the shortstop advancing Flores to second. With two runners on and two outs Analise Fourace came through with a clutch single to center field scoring Flores. Another costly Nittany Lion error allowed Lim to score for the second unearned run of the inning.
Going into the bottom of the fourth, Penn State Berks would take their first lead of the day scoring 3 runs. The designated player, Becca Faust, led off the inning with a double which prompted a pitching change for the Golden Wolves.
Nicole August would come in to replace
Kayla Andrews who started the game. August walked Heather Rissle, then came back to strike out Morgan Olmor for the first out in the inning. Next to bat, Mackie Caffrey hit a homerun to left center to take the 4-3 lead. Â August would then induce a fly ball and ground ball for the final two outs to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth
Emily Carmella singled up the middle to get the Alvernia offense going again. Foruace's sacrifice bunt advanced Carmella to second to have a runner in scoring position. Being called in to pinch hit,
Alyssa Acker hit a single scoring Carmella from second base tying the game 4-4.
Again after being tied into the eighth inning, the international tie breaker placed a runner on second base to start the extra innings. Â
In a repeat of game one, Alvernia was able to execute the sacrifice bunt by Lim moving Flores to third base. Â Again, Carmella came up big doubling to right center easily scoring Flores. The Golden Wolves would strand the runner on second after the Nittany Lions made a pitching change going back to game one starting pitcher Jessica Rozik.
In the bottom of the eight, Penn State Berks answered back with a double by Becca Faust scoring Cori Dickinson, tying the game 5-5. Neither team was able to produce more runs in the ninth inning and the game was then called for darkness.
The Golden Wolves are back in action Sunday, March 18
th for the home opener against Immaculata University set for 1:00 PM.
