Golden Wolves Sweep on Final Day in Florida, Castle Breaks Coaching Record

Castle sets first year coaching record, team off to undefeated start

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 Clermont, Fl. (March 8, 2018) - Alvernia University (8-0) earned wins against Wheaton College (2-6) and Catholic University (5-5) to close out a record spring break in Clermont, Florida on Thursday.

In the first game of the day, the Golden Wolves earned a 5-4 victory over Wheaton College in eight innings.

Alvernia fell behind 3-0 before starting its comeback in the third inning. Analise Fouracre, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored the Golden Wolves first run of the day after reaching home on a wild pitch. Sarah Reinert then drove home Morgan Psiuk, who reached on a double right, with an RBI single to first.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Wolves went up 4-3 with a two-run homerun from Jocelyn Flores.

Wheaton came back and tied it up at 4-4 with an RBI single in the top half of the fifth.

The game would remain tied until the bottom of the eighth. In the second at bat of the inning, Mckenzie Miessau drove home Bern Carney, who was placed on second as part of the tiebreaker rule, with a walkoff single to left.

Riley Shields pitched two and a third to pick up the win.

With the 5-4 win over Wheaton, Jenn Castle broke the record for best start by a first year Alvernia head coach. The record was previously held by former men's basketball head coach, Rick Binder, who started his first season in 1990 with a 6-0 start.

In the second game of the day, Alvernia picked up the 3-2 win over Catholic University, with Morgan Psuik scoring all three for the Golden Wolves.

The Golden Wolves went up 1-0 in the top of when Psiuk was driven home by a Reinert single to right.

The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead on the Golden Wolves in the bottom of the fourth, but Alvernia again battled back.

In the top of the fifth, Reinert again drove home Psuik, this time with a triple to right field. Psuik, who reached early in the inning on a single, tied the game up a 2-2.

Psuik again crossed home in the top of the seventh following an error on the Cardinals second baseman to put the Golden Wolves up 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Catholic was able to put two on, but Alvernia was able to get out of the jam to take the win.

Shields went the distance to pick up her second win of the day.

With the win over Catholic, Alvernia improved to an 8-0 start, which is the best spring break record in program history. The 8-0 start is also just one win away from the tying the best start in program history. The 2011 softball team started out 9-0, but, because of weather, had four games postponed/canceled during the first weeks of the season.

Alvernia returns to Reading and will play at Penn State Berks for a doubleheader on Thursday, March 15.
