BOX SCORE 2 Aston, Pa. (April 10, 2018) – Alvernia University (16-4-1) swept Neumann (11-8) in a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
In game one the Golden Wolves wasted no time getting on the board early scoring in the top of the first inning.
Morgan Psiuk singled to center field before
Riley Shields hit a double to left, scoring Psiuk.
Sarah Bystrycki followed up with a single before stealing second base.
Emily Carmella and
Mckenzie Miessau drew back to back walks allowing Shields to score. Alvernia kept the momentum going scoring another run off a sac fly, RBI, from
Analise Fouracre.
Alyssa Acker singled to right center scoring the 4
th run of the inning.
Riley Shields (10-2) started on the mound going 7 complete shutout innings while scattering 5 hits and 5 strikeouts.
In game two, the Knights took an early lead scoring a single run in each of the first 4 innings. In the top of the fourth inning Shields doubled and Bystrycki followed up with a single to get the rally going for Alvernia. The Golden Wolves were able to capitalize on 2 errors by Neumann to plate 2 runs. With runners still in scoring position,
Sheila O'Donnell pinch hit and ripped a 2 run double to left field tying the game 4-4. Psiuk kept the pressure on the defense with a single, putting runners on 1
st and 3
rd.
Sarah Reinert then had a bunt hit scoring O'Donnell taking the lead 5-4.
Alvernia added an insurance run in the 7
th to make the final score 6-4.
Zoee Garis earned the win throwing 4.2 innings in relief for
Nicole August that lasted 1.1 innings.
Riley Shields received her first save of the season throwing the final 3 outs.
Alvernia will travel to Albright College on Wednesday for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader. Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
