McCarty Posts Impressive Nine Hole Stretch On Day Two of NCAA Championship

Senior Shaves 15 Strokes On the Back Nine

Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida (May 9, 2018) - Senior Cayla McCarty posted a one-over on her final nine days, and Alvernia University came in with a second day team total of 383 on the second day of the NCAA DIII Championship at Mission Inn's El Campeón Course on Wednesday.

Alvernia stayed in 23rd place on the second day of competition. The Golden Wolves also competed in honor of Folds of Honor Day at the NCAA Championship, with each athletes' round being dedicated in honor of a fallen service member.

McCarty started off her day with a rough front nine, posting a scores of bogey or worse on the first eight holes. McCarty carded a par on the par four ninth, but made the turn with a score of 53. However, her par one nine would set the tone for McCarty's final nine holes where she went on an impressive run on the longer and tighter back nine.. She went par-bogey-par-bogey on the first four holes of the back nine, before going par-birdie-birdie-par on the next four holes. Her birdie put on the par 3 15th came after her tee shot landed just over a few feet from the hole. She followed that up with a second consecutive birdie on 16, whose green is surrounded by water. McCarty ended the par or better run with a par on the long par 5 17th. McCarty ended her nine hole run with a bogey on the par 4 18th for a nine hole score of 1-over 38, and a salvaged a 91 on the round.

Also with an impressive day two was junior Emily Gilbert. Gilbert carded ten pars on the round, just one par shy of tying her career record of 11 pars or better in a single round (September 22, 2015 at Raven's Claw). Gilbert started her round with a par on the par 5 first hole and had two consecutive second pars on the third and fourth holes. She then had a string of three consecutive bogeys to go +4 on her round, before she drained two more pars to post a +4 40 at the turn. Gilbert's excellent run continued onto the back nine where she made five pars on the first six holes. She then hit a rough patch on the final three holes, to post an 18 hole score of 86.

Coming in third for Alvernia on the second day of competition was junior Jordan Kissner. Kissner posted two pars on her round, with a par on the par 4 third hole and a par on the par 4 sixth. Her approach shot on the sixth hole was just a few feet from the pin, putting her in an excellent position to go up and down. Kissner struggled on the back nine, but finished with a 102 and just one stroke off her first day score of 101.

Rounding out the second day of the NCAA Championship was freshman Briana Hocker. Hocker posted just one par on the round, and, like every Golden Wolf but McCarty, struggled on the back nine, which runs about 300 yards longer and two strokes more than the front nine. Hocker did have a stretch of bogey golf on four holes on the back nine, but was unable to get anything going and came in with a round of 104.

Alvernia plays an additional 18 holes of competition tomorrow starting with Hocker going off of the first hole at 8:30 AM with a competitor from Saint Scholastica. Following the first 54 holes of competition, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top six individuals who were not part of a team, or who's team did not make the cut.
