Reading, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2018) - Albright College won two of three four ball matches Wednesday afternoon in day one action of the 14th Annual John Yocum Challenge Cup at Berkshire Country Club and leads the match 2-1 with six singles matches scheduled for next Wednesday at Ledgerock Golf Club.
Albright's Sean Dugan and Mike Waugh earned an 8&6 win in the first match of the day over Joe Bode and
Andrew Simmons, and Ben Foreman and Vinny Marfisi won the second match of the day 6&5 over
Kyle Millard and
Andrew Schoenblum.
Alvernia sophomore
Joe Polidoro and freshman
Luke Fagley played 16 holes in 2-under par on the better ball and defeated Nick Hand and Pat Lord 3&2 to get the Golden Wolves on the board.
Pars were good for wins on the first four holes of the day in match one with Dugan and Waugh holding a 2-up lead after Waugh made par on the par 5 4th. Â That sparked a run of four straight wins for the Albright pair who went 5-up thru 8.
They halved the 8th and the 10th and Waugh made a birdie on the par 5 12th to close out the 8&6 win.
In the second match, pars were only good for a half on each of the first three holes until Millard and Schoenblum made bogey at 4 to go one down. Â After halves at 5 and 6, Foreman/Marfisi won three straight holes with pars to hit the turn with a 4-up lead.
The 10th was halved with bogies and Marfisi rolled in a 4-footer for par on 11 to win the hole. Â Foreman nearly holed out from off the green at 12 for another win, and pars and a push on 13 were good enough to close the match 6&5.
The third match got off to a hot start with Hand and Polidoro both making birdie at the reachable par 5 1st and Fagley rolling in a 20-footer for birdie and a win at 2. Â Pars halved 3 and 4, and Hand and Lord both made pars to win at 5 and level the match.
The Alvernia team struck right back with Fagley and Polidoro both getting up and down from off the green at 6 while Lord missed a downhill 12-footer that would have halved the hole. Â The Wolves took their first 2-up lead with pars from both players at 7 and went 3-up with winning pars at 9.
Polidoro and Fagley played the front in 1-under on the better ball and held a 3-up lead with nine to go.
After pars halved the par 4 10th, Hand rolled in a long birdie putt at 11 only to see Polidoro preserve the 3-up lead with a long birdie of his own. Â Hand and Polidoro matched pars on the next three holes and the teams hit the par 4 15th with Alvernia still holding the 3-up lead. Fagley found the green side bunker on his approach and chipped out nicely to makeable distance. Â Hand had his chip run back off the green and Polidoro got up and down to post a 4. Lord then hammered home a putt from the fringe for a winning birdie and the Wolves were 2-up with three to play.
Fagley and Hand both missed the par 3 16th green right and didn't find the surface on their chips. Â Polidoro was the only one to hit the green and had a 30-foot look for birdie. Lord was in the left fringe and his birdie putt came up well short. Â Polidoro nestled his birdie putt up to the hole and was conceded the par and Lord's par attempt was off the mark giving Alvernia the 3&2 victory.
