Waynesburg, Pa. (Jan. 4, 2020) -
Tanner Vogel and
Palmer Rodenhaber both finished in third place to lead Alvernia University to a fourth place team finish at the Waynesburg University Invitational on Saturday.
Vogel, wrestling in the 165 bracket, started off his day with a technical fall over Adrian's Austin Sanders. Vogel then earned falls over Ohio Northern's AJ Szigetti (26 seconds) and Waynesburg's Zach Mackall (1:10) to progress to the semifinal bout. Ohio Northern's Jordan Hardrick earned a major decision over Vogel to move Vogel into the consolation bracket. In the consolation semi, Vogel earned a major decision over Fairmont State's Cade Moisey. Vogel then forced a medical forfeit W&J's Jared Walker to secure third place.
Rodenhaber, wrestling in the heavyweight bracket, started his day by pinning Apprentice's Peter Cortapasso in 4:50. Rodenhaber then earned an 8-2 decision over Fairmont State's TJ Boyd. Rodenhaber fell to Adrian's Isaiah Espinoza in a 3-0 decision to move him to the consolation bracket. Rodenhaber won his final two bouts by no decision to earn the third place finish.
Robert Lawlor also placed for the Golden Wolves, earning a fifth place finish in the 149 bracket. Lawlor started his day with a 17-1 tech fall over Muskingham's Corey Loera. Following a major decision over Trinity's Nico Patch, Lawlor fell to W&J's Michael Heinl. In the consolation semifinal, Fairmont's Devan Hamrick defeated Lawlor with a 15-0 tech fall. Lawlor then earned his fifth place finish with a win due to a medical forfeit over Adrian's Noah Nieman.
Gavin Hollingsworth also earned a fifth place finish for Alvernia in the 157 bracket. Hollingsworth got things started with a 17-0 tech fall over Ohio Northern's Rhett Roeder, and he followed that with a 7-0 decision over Ohio Northern's Adam Lenhoff. After falling by a 12-4 major decision and a 5-0 decision, Hollingsworth picked up his fifth place finish with a win over SVCC's Dominic Fields.
Alvernia finished fourth among 16 teams in attendance.
The Golden Wolves return to the mat at the Ursinus North/South Duals on Saturday.
