Baseball Picks Up Rookie of the Year and Six All-MAC Commonwealth Honors

Annville, Pa. (May 14, 2021) - Alvernia University Baseball picked up six-spots on the 2021 All-MAC Commonwealth baseball team, with five student-athletes earning honors for the Golden Wolves as announced by the Middle Atlantic Conference on Friday. 

Senior Mike Cirilli earned First Team All-Conference honors for two different positions to lead the Golden Wolves. Cirilli was named a First Team All-Conference relief pitcher, as well as a First Team All-Conference second baseman. Sophomore Billy Coleman earned First Team honors as a catcher to round out Alvernia's First Team honors. Senior Michael Simmerman (pitcher), junior Justin Ayala (third base), and Nick Nutile (designated hitter) picked up Second Team All-Conference honors for Alvernia. First-year pitcher Shane Ostrowsky was named Rookie of the Year for the Golden Wolves.

Mike Cirilli was a dual threat for the Golden Wolves this season. One of just two Golden Wolves to start all 33 of Alvernia's games this season, Cirilli batted .375 with a team-high 45 hits. Cirilli drove in 22 runs while scoring a team-high 37 runs of his own. He led the MAC Commonwealth with 16 doubles. He also added two home runs, including a grand slam, on the season. At second base, Cirilli finished the season with 78 putouts and 73 assists. He also turned 20 double plays. Cirilli also made 11 relief appearances on the mound for the Golden Wolves. He finished the season with a 1.00 ERA over 18 innings pitched. He struck out 23 batters and allowed just eight hits and two runs. Cirilli finished with two wins on the season, and finished second in the MAC Commonwealth with six saves. These are Cirilli's third and fourth All-Conference honors, respectively. Cirilli earned Honorable Mention honors as a first-year student in 2017, and First Team honors as a junior in 2019.

Sophomore catcher Billy Coleman picked up his first career All-MAC Commonwealth honors. Coleman finished the season batting .371 for Alvernia over 22 games played, including 19 starts. He finished the season with 23 hits, including two doubles, two triples, and a home run. Coleman drove in 10 runs while scoring 15. Behind the plate, Coleman finished with 111 putouts and 17 assists. He assisted in turning one double player, and threw out four runners attempting to steal.

Senior Michael Simmerman picked up his first career All-MAC Commonwealth honor after finishing the season with a team and MAC Commonwealth leading 1.27 ERA among starting pitchers. Simmerman appeared in nine games, including five starts, and finished his season with a 5-0 record and one save. He pitched 42 and two thirds innings and struck out 35 batters. He allowed just six earned runs.

Junior third baseman Justin Ayala also picked up his first career All-MAC Commonwealth honors this season. Ayala finished his season with a .325 batting average over 23 games played, including 20 starts. Ayala recorded 25 hits on the season, including five doubles and a triple. He drove in nine runs while scoring 19. In the field, Ayala finished the year with 19 putouts and 36 assists. He also turned nine double players for the Golden Wolves.

Rounding out Alvernia's All-Conference honorees is designated hitter Nick Nutile. Nutile is the other Golden Wolf to start in all 33 of Alvernia's games this season. At the plate, Nutile batted .356 for Alvernia. He finished his season with 37 hits, including four doubles and a triple. He finished the season with 23 RBIs and 27 runs scored. This is Nutile's second All-Conference honor. He earned Honorable Mention honors in 2019.

Jack Barry of York College was named Player of the Year, and Brandon Haggerty, also of York, was named pitcher of the year. Mike Scappa of York was named Coach of the Year.
