Women's Golf Takes First at Kutztown

Fleetwood, Pa. (Oct. 2, 2023) - Alvernia University Women's Golf used a strong first day showing to propel itself to a win at the Kutztown University Fall Invitational following the second and final day of competition at Moselem Springs.

Alvernia finished with a two-day total of 656 to finish 17 strokes ahead of second place West Chester University. Alvernia was the only Division III team competing in the field of six. The win marks Alvernia's third invitational win of the season, and it also marks the third straight win at Kutztown dating back to the 2020-2021 season. The Golden Wolves have won all invitationals they have competed in this fall season.

"Moselem Springs is the most difficult course we play every year," said Head Coach Tom O'Connell. "The team score we posted on day one gave us a commanding lead for the final round, and the confidence to deliver the win."

Katie Lapinsky led Alvernia with a second-place overall finish of 153 following a second day score of 78. She finished one stroke back of Kutztown's Brooke Graham who took low medalist honors.

Lapsinky started her day off with an ever par performance through the front nine following a birdie on the second hole and seven pars. She followed that with three more pars on the back nine as well as a birdie on the par three 13th hole.

Finishing in second for Alvernia and third overall was McKylie Boreman with a two-day total of 154 and a second day score of 80. Boreman finished her day with four pars and a birdie on the front nine and four pars on the back nine.

"McKylie and Katie provided a huge one-two punch shooting a 74 and 75 during the opening round on Sunday," added O'Connell. "I cannot remember two better scores in our history in a round at Kutztown."

In third for Alvernia and in 13th overall was Rylee Stenzel with a two-day total of 177 following a Monday round of 91. Stenzel's round was highlighted by two pars on the front nine and two pars on the back nine.

Rounding things out for Alvernia was Grace Spielman with a two-day total of 178 to finish t-14th overall. Spielman's round was highlighted by a birdie on the par four 2nd hole, and three total pars on the round. Spielman was the only Alvernia player to improve upon their Sunday finish.

"Grace delivered one of her most important collegiate rounds on a day we needed depth from the entire line-up," added O'Connell.

Alvernia looks to continue it hot start to the 2023-24 season on Monday at the Muhlenberg Invitational.
