Golden Wolves Take Down Cedar Crest 28-21 in Season Opener

Reading, Pa. (Nov. 2, 2023) - Alvernia University (1-0) opened up its 2023 season on Thursday with a 28-21 victory over Cedar Crest College (0-1) in a non-conference women's wrestling dual at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court. 

The dual against the Falcons marked the first home dual that the Golden Wolves have hosted in program history. 

The first match of the night featured Leilani Martinez from Cedar Crest and Grace Molloy from Alvernia at 109 pounds. Molloy secured a commanding 10-1 decision over Martinez to put the Golden Wolves up 3-1 early. 

Cedar Crest's Adriana Dias then went up against Alvernia's Taylor Bloom in the 116 pound bout. Dias had a chance to pin Bloom but Bloom worked a reversal and pinned Dias 2:28 into the first period to secure five points for Alvernia and put the Golden Wolves up 8-1. 

The Falcons tallied forfeit wins at 123 and 130 pounds to secure ten team points and take the 11-8 lead. 

The next match of the night featured Alaina Standford from Cedar Crest and Alana Durham from Alvernia in the 136 pound match with Durham winning by fall just 46 seconds into the first period. The fall gave the Golden Wolves the lead again, 13-11. 

Alvernia's Kathryn Berger received a victory by forfeit in the 143 pound match and secured five more points to extend the Golden Wolves lead to 18-11 with three bouts remaining. 

The next match featured Draydon Charman from Cedar Crest and Makayla Marreo-Mogel from Alvernia in the 155 pound bout. Charman worked a victory by fall over Marrero-Mogel 2:21 into the match to grab five points for the Falcons and cut the Alvernia lead to two, 18-16. 

Deborah Flores from Alvernia faced off against Sarah Seltzer from Cedar Crest in the 170 pound match with Seltzer securing the pin and giving the Falcons the late 21-18 lead over the Golden Wolves. 

Alvernia's Gianna Faura received a victory by forfeit at 191 pounds and Nevaeh Blevins received a forfeit at 101 pounds to secure ten points for Alvernia and clinch the 28-21 victory for Alvernia. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Sunday when they travel to East Stroudsburg for the ESU Open at 10:00 AM.
