Golden Wolves Split With Falcons

Reading, Pa (April 16, 2023) - Alvernia University (21-11, 12-6) split the doubleheader against Messiah University (16-16-1, 12-9) in a MAC Commonwealth baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Angelica Park. 

The Falcons took game one by a score of 9-0 but the Golden Wolves bounced back with a 10-5 victory in game two to half the doubleheader but Messiah took the series 2-1 after an extra innings win on Friday. 

Messiah got on the board in the top of the first when Ryan Friend was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force Isaiah Parido in and take an early 1-0 lead. 

The Falcons put two more runs up in the second inning with an RBI single by Parido and a sacrifice fly by Sam Zercher to give Messiah a 3-0 advantage. 

Messiah put another run across the plate in the top half of the fourth when Zercher tallied an RBI single through the left side to score Joshua Ammons and extend the lead to 4-0. 

Josh Jacob tallied a two RBI single to left center to put the Falcons up 6-0 in the top of the sixth inning.

Messiah tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh inning with Ammons singling to left to score Parido and Zercher and Jacob both tallied sacrifice flies to push the lead to 9-0 and secure game one of the doubleheader. 

Evan Wood got the start on the mound for the Golden Wolves and went four innings and struck three batters out. Michael Andrew, James Mueller and Joe Scarfone all pitched in relief for Alvernia. 

Jason Kelly led the Golden Wolves with one hit and a hit by pitch, Zach Rogacki tallied a walk and Thomas Faggioni led with five putouts. 

Messiah started right where they left off in game two, scoring four runs in the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Friend scored on an error, David Martinez and Parido scored on wild pitches and Ammons stole home to give the Falcons a four run lead. 

The Golden Wolves grabbed one back in the bottom half of the second when Grant Fitzgerald singled to left field to drive Mike Ramundo in and cut the deficit to three, 4-1. 

Alvernia tallied two in the bottom of the third inning when Ramundo walked with the bases loaded to force Faggioni in and Fitgerald recorded another RBI single to left field to make it a 4-3 ballgame. 

Messiah responded with a run in the fifth inning thanks to a Evan Wagaman sacrifice fly to score Dustin Isanogle and extend the Falcon lead to 5-3. 

The Golden Wolves responded with a seven spot in the bottom half of the fifth inning to take a five run lead. Ramundo started things off with a RBI single through the right side to score Connor Friedel then Fitzgerald followed that up with his third RBI single of the day to tie the ballgame at five. Jason Lind then tallied an RBI single to left, driving Ramundo in, Fitzgerald scored thanks to a sacrifice fly to right by Tim Siegel and Rogacki wrapped up the seven run inning with a bases clearing, three RBI double to right center to put Alvernia up 10-5. 

Josh Krider and Matt Mays came on in relief for the sixth and seventh innings and shut down the Falcons to secure a 10-5 victory in game two. 

Brad Coley started on the bump for the Golden Wolves, striking out three over two innings. Shayne Orstrowsky came on in relief for Coley, striking out four and only allowed one hit over three innings pitched and earned the win. 

Fitzgerald led Alvernia in game two with three hits and three RBIs, Rogacki also had three RBI and a double. Ramundo tallied two RBI and both him and Faggioni scored two runs. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Elizabethtown to take on the Blue Jays in a non-conference matchup at 3:30 PM.
