Records Fall at the Sweetest Place on Earth

Team Low Score and Individual Low Score Records are Reset by the Golden Wolves at Hershey CC

Hershey, Pa. (Sept. 12, 2023) - Alvernia University Women's Golf saw two major records fall as the Golden Wolves went low to win the Elizabethtown College Invitational on Tuesday at Hershey Country Club (East).

Alvernia broke its team record by five strokes as the Golden Wolves posted a team score of 310 to take first place. First year Cassidy Miksich broke the Alvernia single-round record by two strokes as she posted a 2-under 69 on the par 71 course to take home her first career low medalist honors. She broke the record previously held by junior teammate Katie Lapinsky (2022, Muhlenberg CC) and recent graduate Yupha Muzyka (2019, Raven's Claw).

"Cassidy's achievement on the course today was special for our program, the team, and Cassidy as a golfer," said Head Coach Tom O'Connell. "Not only did her score put her in the Alvernia record books, it more importantly helped us pick up a win at a tournament hosted on a championship golf course with a lot of history."

Alvernia finished first among the field of seven teams. The Golden Wolves finished seven strokes ahead of second-place York College, and 56 strokes ahead of third place finisher Drew University.

"York College Women's Golf is such a quality golf program in our region, and in the country," said O'Connell. "It's no small accomplishment to take home a win. If York is in the field, they are the ones setting the bar. But, we got to set the bar today."

The Golden Wolves were showing signs of coming into 2023-24 on a hot start. Alvernia tied its single-round record of 315 on September 3rd at the Cal. U. Invitational in its first round of the season. Alvernia then broke the record on a historically tough Hershey Country Club - the home to the MAC Championship for several years.

"To shatter our team's low score by five shots was a total team contribution," said O'Connell. "We've been flirting around this type of round. To set the program record at Hershey is special. I think this team and all of our previous team's hold Hershey East as a favorite destination and it truly is 'the Sweetest Place on Earth.'"

Miksich started her day on the par four 7th hole with a par and never looked back. After a bogey on her second hole, she got right back on track with a par on the ninth. Miksich then birdied the par four 10th hole - a long par four with very little room to work behind the green. After going bogey-bogey on the next two holes, she corrected again with a par on the par three 13th. She then picked up another birdie on the par five 14th. Following two pars on 15 and 16, Miksich birdied the 17th and finished off the back nine with a par on the 18th.

Miksich was tasked with the long par five 1st hole to start off her final stretch, and she was able to walk away with a par to keep things rolling. Following a par on the short par three 2nd hole, she birdied the third hole to kick off a nice run to close out her round. Miksich pared the 4th and 5th holes before rolling in a birdie on the par five 6th hole to close out her round at 2-under.

Finishing in second for Alvernia and third overall was McKylie Boreman with a round of 77. Boreman posted ten pars on her round - five on each side - as well as a birdie on the difficult par five 1st hole.

Finishing in a tie for third for Alvernia and sixth place overall was Rylee Stenzel and Katie Lapinsky with rounds of 82. Stenzel had seven pars on her round as well as birdies on the 1st hole and 11th hole. Lapinsky had nine pars on her round and had birdies on the 5th and 13th holes.

Playing as Alvernia's fifth was Paige Damon with a career-low round of 92. Damon started off with a par on her first hole - the par three 2nd. She finished her round with four pars and a birdie on the par four 9th. Damon finished in 16th place overall.

Alvernia is back in action this Thursday with a match play event against Kutztown. After a bit over a week off, they then return to action on September 25th at the Albright Invitational.
