Alvernia Takes Eighth at Bud Whitman Invitational

New Castle, Del. (Oct. 13, 2024) - Alvernia University Women's Bowling finished in eighth place overall in a field of 15 teams at the Chestnut Hill College Bud Whitman Invitational to open the 2024-25 season.

Alvernia started day two going 1-3 in Baker style match play. The Golden Wolves were then the six seed heading into the best-of-seven matches to close out the tournament, but Alvernia dropped both best of seven contests to finish in eighth place overall.

Alvernia started its day taking on FDU. The Golden Wolves posted a team score of 889 across five games, but FDU bettered Alvernia with a score of 1067. Alvernia posted its best score of the match with a 204 in game five.

Alvernia then bowled a 908 in its bye match before getting back in the win column with a 960-710 win over Holy Family to close out its qualifying matches. Alvernia bowled 200 or better in three of its five games against the Tigers, and its highest score of the match came in game five with a 209.

The Golden Wolves then moved into best-of-seven matches and faced Wilmington University first. The Golden Wolves took game one, 192-177, to take the early 1-0 lead. But, Wilmington evened the match at 1-1 with a game two win and edged Alvernia by four pins in game three, 159-155, to take game three. Wilmington went on to win games four and five for the 4-1 win.

Alvernia then moved on to face Delaware State to see who would take seventh place. For the second straight match, Alvernia took the early match lead with a 187-155 win over the Hornets in game one. Del. State then took the next two games to take a 2-1 lead before Alverina evened the match at 2-2 with a 159-147 win in game four. But, the Hornets took the final two games to take the match, 4-2.

"We had a tough day on the lanes today," said Head Coach Kerry Smith. "However, the Golden Wolves are ready to work hard this week to prepare for our next event next weekend."

Alvernia will have its shortest road trip of the season next weekend. The Golden Wolves will be at Berks Lanes in Sinking Spring for the Kutztown Golden Bear Invitational.
