Weather Spoils Alvernia's Opening Day of 2024 Season

Leesburg, Florida (March 3, 2024) - Alvernia University Softball's first day of the 2024 season was spoiled by weather-related cancelations on Sunday in Leesburg, Florida.

Alvernia was originally slated to open its 2024 season today with a game against Johnson and Wales and a game against New England College.

Alvernia's game against Johnson and Wales was pushed to later in the evening from its morning start, and Alvernia was set to take on New England College at 2:45 PM. Alvernia's game against New England did not begin until 3:45 PM after the Pilgrims went to the ninth inning in their earlier game.

Alvernia and the Pilgrims made it through the first inning, and Alvernia had its first batter in the bottom of the second at the plate before the horn sounded for lightning in the area. After an extensive delay, all remaining games for the game were canceled. Because Alvernia and New England did not make it through enough innings to make it official, the stats from the first inning and half do not count.

Alvernia will be back in Leesburg tomorrow morning to take on DeSales at 10:00 AM followed by Regis at 3:00 PM
