Reading, Pa. (Jan. 29, 2025) - Hood College (13-5, 6-1) used a 61 point second half to down Alvernia University (12-6, 4-3), 94-79, on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth Men's Basketball action at Alvernia's Jack McCloskey Court.
The Golden Wolves got off to a quick start and led by ten, 15-5, through the opening six minutes of action. But, Hood took advantage of a seven minute stretch without an Alvernia point to take the lead, 20-15, with 7:25 to play in the opening half. The two teams traded points the remainder of the half, and Alvernia took a three point lead into the break, 36-33.
The Blazers came out of the half on fire, outscoring the Golden Wolves 33-11 in the first ten minutes of the half. Hood never looked back and cruised to the 94-79 win.Â
How it Happened
- Hood set the tone early for 3-point shooting, scoring the opening points of the game on a 3-pointer on its first possession. Hood then took a 5-0 lead through its first two possessions for the early lead.
- Alvernia got things started on a pull up jumper from Jakob Kelly, which sparked a quick 15-0 run for the Golden Wolves that gave them a 15-5 lead through six minutes. Robert Cottrell led Alvernia with eight points during the run, and Jacob Stoudt added three. The Golden Wolves shot 3-for-4 from 3-point range during the run.
- The Blazers ended the Alvernia run with a 3-pointer and then started a 15-0 run of their own. The Blazers held Alvernia scoreless for seven minutes, and used that opportunity to take a 20-15 lead with 7:25 to play.Â
- The Golden Wolves ended their scoring drought with a Kelly layup, but the Blazers continued to work the floor beyond the arc and used another 3-pointer to take a 23-17 lead.Â
- A pair of made free throws from Kelly and a Robert Mullan three brought Alvernia back within one, 23-22, and the Golden Wolves retook the lead on a Janye Stanley jumper with 4:38 to play.
- The Golden Wolves and Blazers traded baskets in the closing minute of the first half, and Alvernia used a driving layup by Mullan with 47 seconds to play to take a 35-33 lead into the half.
- The Blazers came out of the half on a scoring frenzy, and quickly built their lead up to 66-47 after outsourcing Alvernia 33-11 in the opening nine minutes of the second half.
- A deep 3-pointer from Kelly and a layup from Mullan of steal brought Alvernia back within 14, 66-52, with nine minutes to play. But, Alvernia could not catch the Blazers.
- Hood built its lead up to 20, 77-57, with 6:40 to play and maintained at least a 15 point lead the rest of the way as the Blazers took the 94-79 win.

- Jakob Kelly led Alvernia with 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting. He finished the night 5-for-9 from 3-point range. Kelly also led Alvernia with eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

- Tonight's game marked the conclusion of the first round of conference play. The Golden Wolves are in fourth place through the first cycle with a 4-3 record. Alvernia is one game back of Albright, who the Golden Wolves open the second round of conference play with on Saturday.Â
