Strong Pitching Leads Golden Wolves to Doubleheader Sweep of Mustangs on Senior Day

Reading, Pa (April 13, 2025) - Alvernia University's (19-11, 11-3) pitching staff allowed just one run and surrendered six total hits in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader sweep of Stevenson University (8-23, 3-11) Sunday afternoon in Angelica Park.

The Golden Wolves walked it off in game one of the doubleheader thanks to a Jake Chapman single through the right side to take a 1-0 victory to start the day. Chris Sasso tossed 6.1 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and fanned nine batters in game one. Matt Mays came on in relief of Sasso and tossed two thirds of an inning and shut the Mustangs down to earn the win. Nick Ferraioli tossed seven innings of one run baseball in game two, scattered just three hits and struck out four batters to lead the Golden Wolves to a 5-1 lead in game two of the doubleheader.

Game One: Alvernia 1, Stevenson 0 (7 inn.)
Hits: Alvernia 5, Stevenson 3
Errors: Alvernia 1, Stevenson 1
WP: Matt Mays (2-0) LP: Dhruv Indelicato

How it Happened
  • Game one was a pitching duel from start to finish. Each team had just three hits apiece through the first six innings. Alvernia's best opportunity came in the fifth inning when Mike Pulcini hit a stand-up leadoff triple. But, he was stranded on third as Stevenson got out of the inning.
  • Chris Sasso and Matt Mays combined to get out of the top of the seventh and strand a Mustang on second base.
  • Alvernia then jumped on the Mustangs in the bottom of the seventh. RJ Emrich led off the inning with a single to center field. He was pinch run for by Noah Waldron. Waldron advanced to second after Pulcini was hit by a pitch, and he made his way to third on a Quincy Esannason walk. The Mustangs brought in an outfielder to load the infield in an attempt to keep anything from reaching the outfield. But, Jake Chapman stepped up and split a single through the left side to bring in Waldron and secure the 1-0 win for Alvernia.

How it Happened
  • The Golden Wolves took an early two run lead after posting runs in the first and second innings. Logan Nelson got things going in the bottom of the first with an RBI single through the right side that scored Quincy Esannason
  • Ryan Kopf then put the Golden Wolves up 2-0 in the home half of the second with an RBI double into the left center gap that scored Timmy Hitchcock from first and made it a 2-0 ballgame.
  • The Mustangs pulled one back with an RBI single to center to make it 2-1. Stevenson then loaded the bases but Alvernia starter Nick Ferraioli got a flyout to left field to strand the bases loaded and preserve the 2-1 Alvernia lead.
  • The Golden Wolves got that run back in the home half of the third inning thanks to a Nelson sacrifice fly to right field that scored Esannason and pushed the Alvernia lead back to two, 3-1.
  • Alvernia added another in the fourth after Jake Chapman flew out to center field which was deep enough to score Kopf and give Alvernia the 4-1 advantage.
  • The Golden Wolves tacked on one more insurance run in the home half of the sixth inning to make it a 5-1 ballgame.
  • Jake Umans came on in relief of Nick Ferraioli in the top of the eighth inning and tossed two innings of scoreless, hitless baseball to help secure the 5-1 victory for the Golden Wolves and the weekend sweep of the Mustangs.
