Records Fall as Alvernia Opens Outdoor Season at Virginia Wesleyan

Virginia Beach, Va. (March 21, 2026) - A trio of Alvernia Men's Track and Field program records fell on Saturday as Alvernia opened its 2026 outdoor season at the Betty S. Rogers Invitational, hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach. 

First year Christian Medina broke a pair of records in his outdoor collegiate debut. Medina took first place in the discus with a mark of 42.31 meters to set a new program record by just under two meters. Medina also had a first place finish in the shot put with a mark of 14.90 meters to set another program record for the Golden Wolves, this time by .26 meters.

Andrew Simmons also set a new program record for Alvernia on the track. After qualifying for the 100m final, Simmons posted a time of 10.80 seconds to take second place and break a 13 year old program record of 10.95 seconds that has been held since 2013. Simmons also set a new PR by just 1/100th of a second in the 200m with a time of 22.84 seconds. 

Trip Freitag also made a splash in his collegiate debut, taking first place in the javelin with a throw of 52.86 meters. 

Joel Thomas took third place in the triple jump with a PR of 12.85 meters, and Grant Sharp also posted a new PR in the shot put with a mark of 13.23 meters to take fourth place. Quinn Harter rounded out Alvernia's PRs in the field with a mark of 11.82 meters in the triple jump to take eighth place. 

On the track, William Dennis had a pair of PRS. He posted a 12.7 in the 100m and a 26.00 in the 200m. Daniel Kirn also posted a PR in the 200m with a time of 25.32 seconds. 

Alvernia finished the day with 20 total top-ten finishes, including 13 top-five finishes. Sharp took fourth in both the discus and shot put, and Arnold took fourth in the hammer. Spencer Hahn took fifth in the 1,500m, Freitag took fifth in the discus, and Sharp rounded out Alvernia's top-five finishes with a fifth place finish in the hammer.

Alvernia is back in action on Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28 at the Widener University Danny Curan Invitational.
