Reading, Pa. (October 20, 2007) - Alvernia scored ten unanswered goals en route to Alvernia's first win of the 2007-2008 season. Six Crusaders found the back of the net in a convincing double digit explosion. Freshman
Anthony Froio (Glenolden, Pa/Interboro) collected four goals, while line mate
John Caputo (Philadelphia, Pa/Roman Catholic) added two goals and two assists. Alvernia peppered the Eagles with 86 shots and chased three different goalies in the process. The Crusader defense surrendered a modest 21 shots, with sophomore goaltender
Ammon Morgan (Schwenkesville, Pa/Springford) recording the win.
Alvernia's offensive standouts included junior defenseman
Steve Schlegel (Morrisville, Pa/Conwell Egan) cashing in a four point evening with one goal and three assists. Freshman
Zane Camburn (Riegelsville, Pa/Nazareth) turned in another stellar two-way performance. Camburn's energy translated into his first collegiate goal and three assists. The third line trio of Caputo-Camburn-Froio has proven to be the most productive offensive combination for the Crusader's thus far. Additional lamp lighters for the Vern were freshman
Devon Coleman (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton) who scored his second goal of the season and also notched two helpers.
Eric Ryan (Aston, Pa/Sun Valley) drove home his first collegiate goal. Ryan, Alvernia's second line center created numerous scoring chances with evasive skating and polished stick handling.
Alvernia's defense was not denied score sheet honors, with junior
Brent Reed (Hamburg, Pa/Hamburg) finding twine again from the blue line. Reed boosted his early goal total to three for the young season. Yet another noteworthy performance was turned in by freshman Kyle Young (Chester Springs, Pa/Bishop Shanahan) who held the blue line and popped home what proved to be the game winning tally. Young and defensive partner
Iain MacMillan (Perkasie, Pa/ Pennridge) have quickly developed into a formidable pairing on the blue line. Some unsung heroes not seen in the box score included freshman
Bob Crouse (Norwood, Pa/Interboro), who stayed low on the offensive radar screen but managed some punishing hits in his defensive zone. The Crusader's moved back to .500 on the season with the win.
Did You Notice?
Freshman Brett McCarthy (Lopatcong, NJ / Phillipsburg) dressed for his first collegiate game and nailed down one point with an assist on Alvernia's fourth goal.
Steve Schlegel continued his grudge match with American University's Seth Phiefen. Schlegel won that battle when Phiefen was showed the gate with a game misconduct.
Coach Plue ran the offense on a solo mission with Coach Kelly on early season sabbatical.
Special Team Kudos:
Only one matching penalty over the final two periods.
