BOX SCORE
Reading, Pa. (Oct. 6, 2007) – William Paterson scored a tie-breaking goal in the 49th minute and held off late pressure from Alvernia College in a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action at Alvernia.
The Pioneers (8-4) opened the scoring in the 18th minute and held the 1-0 lead through the halftime break. Alvernia (9-3), which saw an eight-game winning streak come to an end, dominated the early parts of the second half finally netting the equalizer on a penalty corner when
Amber Landis (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) snuck home a pass from
Lynsey Treadwell (Farmingdale, N.J./Howell) in the 43rd minute.
WPU regained the lead six minutes later. Sophomore Chelsea Winkelspecht tallied her second of the game deflecting a drive off the Alvernia defense an into the net. Pioneer goalie Christina Auger stymied the Alvernia offense making seven saves on the day, none bigger than a pad stop on a drive off the stick of
Janelle Lynch (Macungie, Pa./Brandywine Heights) in the final minutes of play.
Alvernia held decisive advantages in shots (13-6) and corners (12-1), but couldn't find the equalizer. Junior goalie
Audrey Hoffman (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights) finished with three saves.
The Crusaders will continue their non-conference schedule with an evening match at Swarthmore College on Monday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
