Reading, Pa. (Dec. 8, 2007). Alvernia's longest club winning streak came to a disappointing halt with a 2-1 loss to Neumann College. The game featured some exceptional goaltending on both ends and the penalty box got a work out. The Vern, which is currently ranked 19th in the ACHA Atlantic Conference may have jeopardized their standing by dropping the contest to the previously ranked Neumann club. The key loss snapped the Crusader's ten game winning streak; over that impressive span Alvernia never trailed in any game.
Scoring highlights were few and far between as both teams skated to a scoreless first period. Neumann slipped one by the Crusader goaltender
Chris Medico (Madison NJ/Madison HS) midway through the second period. The low scoring first two periods were hampered by an absurd number of penalties. Officiating dominated the pace of play with twenty infractions dragging the games tempo over the first forty minutes of hockey.
Neumann scored the insurance goal early in the final period and almost made the shut out stick. Alvernia cashed in its loan goal late in the contest when
Steve Schlegel (Morrisville, Pa/Conwell Egan) punched home a power play effort from the middle slot. The Crusaders played hockey's version of russian roulette with a pulled goaltender for the final one minute and seventeen seconds. The extra attacker made things interesting as Alvernia had several key face off's in the offensive zone creating high anxiety as time expired.
