Alvernia Wins First Tournament Title

Crusaders Blank Trinity For Second Straight Shutout

Washington, D.C. (Sept. 2, 2007) – Alvernia College was dominant in posting its second straight shutout to start the year and its first ever Women's Soccer Tournament Title Sunday afternoon. The Crusaders (2-0) blanked Trinity (D.C.) 7-0 getting two goals apiece from senior Brandi Light (Myerstown, Pa./Tulpehocken) and freshman Casey Weber (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan).

Weber opened the scoring in the 18th minute assisted by fellow freshman Alli Blair (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin), and assisted Light on a corner kick five minutes later for a 2-0 cushion. Light knocked home her second, unassisted in the 42nd minute and Weber tallied number two assisted by Angela Gibson (Auburn, Pa./Schuylkill Haven) with 45 seconds left in the opening half.

Alvernia built on its 4-0 halftime lead in the 62nd minute when Weber notched her second assist of the game setting up Alex Stengel (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove). The lead grew to 6-0 when Kate McCaffrey (Northeast, Pa./St. Hubert) scored in the 77th minute and freshman Kristina Hutchison (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson) closed the scoring with her first goal of the season in the 86th minute. Both of the final two goals were assisted by freshman Kara Ross (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown).

Alvernia will continue its four-game, season-opening road trip on Wednesday with a trip to Delaware Valley College.
