Crusaders Clobber American 14-2 In DC

BOX SCORE

Washington, DC (Oct. 11, 2008) - Fort Dupont Ice Arena could not withstand the arsenal of offense unleashed by Alvernia University on Saturday night. The Vern, fit to be tied after a frustrating loss on Friday, kept the goal lamp lit all night long, en route to a 14 -2 trouncing of the American University Eagles. The Vern's first Mason-Dixon Conference game featured hat tricks from freshmen Christian Baron (Philadelphia, PA/La Salle College) and Ian Meiskey (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield). The Vern's one sided win featured several Crusaders notching multiple goal evenings. Junior John Caputo (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) tallied twice, as did sophomore defenseman Eric Ryan (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield).

The Crusaders pelted 51 shots while limiting the Eagles to 16 shots. Defenseman Brent Reed (Strausburg, PA/Hamburg) collected his first goal of the season while adding one helper. Reed's defensive partner Bohler tallied a goal and assist keeping up a productive Crusader blue line. Captain Michael Gilmore (Farmington, MN/Eastview) snapped home a winner and Geoff McGrath (Deptford, NJ/Roman Catholic) contributed a goal with a beautiful assist from line mate Sean Castineira (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic). Castineira has quietly become Alvernia's best table setter. The freshman has been ultra effective in feeding team leading line mates Anthony Froio (Glenolden, PA/Interboro) and McGrath. Coach O'Connell notes that “Castineira combines the skill to attract several defenders with the awareness to find his teammates in the open space.”

The Crusader's began their quest for a Mason-Dixon Championship which came up one game short last season. The Vern is focused to keep their eye on the prize. Alvernia will travel to Lawrenceville, New Jersey on Saturday night with non league match up with Division II Rider University.
