Shafer Leads Alvernia Past Immaculata

Reading, Pa. (Apr. 12, 2008) – Senior attack McKenna Shafer (Delran, N.J./Cinnaminson) scored nine goals to pace the offense as Alvernia College defeated Immaculata University, 20-11 Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.

Alvernia opened up with back-to-back goals from Tara Walls (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and Katie O'Brien (Boothwyn, Pa./Garnet Valley) and the Crusaders (2-8, 2-3 PAC) never trailed. Shafer scored her first two separated by just under 60 seconds giving the hosts a 4-1 lead eight minutes into play.

The scoring went back and forth for a time before Alvernia capped the first half with the final five goals of the frame for a 12-5 lead at the break. Walls, who opened the scoring, tallied the last two goals of the half and finished the day with four goals and an assist.

Shafter opened the second half with her fifth goal of the day and added her sixth seven minutes later. Walls scored midway through the half and Shafer scored three of the last four for Alvernia.

Junior Janelle Fulmer (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and sophomore Amanda Odenwalt (Lancaster, Pa./The Janus School) combined to make 14 saves in the win.

Alvernia will travel to Eastern University on Tuesday.
