Reading, Pa. (Aug. 31, 2008) – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team (1-1) got six goals from five different players including a pair from
Katie Botkin (Swoope, Va./Buffalo Gap) in a 6-0 win over Chatham University (0-2) Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Crusader Cup Tournament hosted by Alvernia College.
The Hornets set the tone early with
Lindsay Thompson (Winchester, Va./Radford) finding the back of the net in the third minute of play. Botkin made it 2-0 in the 14th minute finding the top corner of the net past Chatham keeper
Mary McMahon (Harrisburg, Pa.).
Lauren Morris (Whiteford, Md./North Harford) opened the second-half scoring on a penalty kick in the 50th minute and
Crystal Burton (Prince George, Va./Prince George) followed unassisted in the 58th minute for a 4-0 lead. Freshman
Brooke Strickler (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) split time in goal and in the field and scored unassisted in the 63rd minute for a 5-0 lead. Botkin's second goal of the game three minutes later closed the scoring.
McMahon finished the game with 15 saves and 31 overall for the two-day tournament and was named to the All-Tournament Team. She was joined by teammate
Ashley Bates (Latrobe, Pa.).
Shenandoah placed three players on the All-Tournament Team. Morris, who finished with one goal, freshman defender
Jessi Dennis (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), who assisted Thompson for the game-winner, and sophomore goalie
Kat Terza (Manassas, Va./Seton) who made a handful of spectacular saves over the weekend.
