Alvernia Unable To Hold Off Juniata

Crusaders Fall 2-1 Thanks To A Late Juniata Goal

BOX SCORE

Reading, PA (Sept, 30, 2008) - Sophomore Morgan Davidheiser (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season, but it was not enought as the Crusaders (2-6-1) fell to visiting Juniata College (5-4-1) by a score of 2-1 this afternoon in non-conference action at Sovereign Bank Sports Park (SBSP).  This was the first ever home Alvernia game to be played at SBSP, and SBSP will host the remainder of the men's and women's soccer home games this season.

In the fiesty contest where four yellow cards were handed out, Alveria struck first when Davidheiser battled for the ball just pass midfield and quickly made his way up the field.  He lofted a shot just past the goalie's reach to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.  The remainder of the first half was scoreless as the Crusaders out shoot Juniata 6-4, and earned two corner kicks to Juniata's zero.  Crusader goalie Richard Kessler (Reading, PA/Reading) would need two saves in the first half to preserve the scoreless tie.

Juniata netted the equalizer just over ten minutes into the second half when Andrew Steffen found forward Noah Bowers open in front of the net and Bowers connected for his fifth goal of the season just past the diving Kessler.

Despite Alvernia being out shot in the second half 7-2 the game remained tied at one into the final minutes of play.  As the game seemed to be heading into overtime, Juniata managed to sneak one by Kessler thanks to senior Bryan Hess for the game-winner with just over five minutes to play.

Alvernia University will return to action Oct. 4th when they travel to FDU for their second conference game at 1:00 pm.
