Alvernia Suffers First Loss At Cortland

Red Dragons Talley Three Goals In Eight Minute Stretch

BOX SCORE

Cortland, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2008)
– Under overcast, threatening skies, the SUNY-Cortland offense struck like lightning scoring three goals in an eight minute stretch to salt away a 5-0 win over Alvernia College Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Cortland.

Cortland opened the scoring on Laura Boucher's first goal of the season and Alvernia stayed close limiting the Red Dragon offense to just six first-half shots. The Crusaders snapped off seven shots in the opening frame, but couldn't find the back of the net against Cortland starter Dayna Moneta.

The second half saw a pair of new goalies with Kirsten Kelley (Kirkwood, Pa./Bishop Shannan) taking over for Kristin Mantle (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) in the Crusaders' goal. The Dragons turned up the offense peppering the Crusader netminder with 19 shots in the second half and Kelley did an admirable job to deny eight, but Cortland scored on a 40-yard free kick in the 61st minute, on a deflected shot in the 68th minute, and following a turnover just a minute later.

Freshman Rachel Gimber (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and sophomore Allison Blair (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) led the Crusaders offense with three and two shots respectively. Alvernia finished with nine saves while Cortland tallied five.

Alvernia will finish the Red Dragon Classic playing SUNY-Oswego on Sunday morning at 11:00.
