Cortland, NY (Sept. 7, 2008) – The Crusader Women's Soccer team suffered their second loss at the Red Dragon Classic hosted by SUNY Cortland on Sunday afternoon. Alvernia took the 1-0 first half lead but could not hold off Oswego State as they erupted for four late second-half goals to defeat the Crusaders. With the loss Alvernia sits a 2-2 on the season, while Oswego improves to 2-0.
Alvernia opened the scoring in the 34th minute. After Kelly Reilly's (Pottstown, PA/Boyertown) initial shot was turned away at the goal line following a corner kick, the ball bounced right back to Reilly, who one-timed her second chance into the net for her first career goal. The Crusader's were able to hold Oswego State scoreless through the first half with goalie Kristin Mantle (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) tallying three saves.
The Crusaders played tough defense and carried the lead late into the game when Oswego took control of the contest with its four-goal barrage in less than 16 minutes. Junior Leah Paige led Oswego with a goal and an assist, and freshmen Ana Jurcak,Kheetah Koutouan and Alyssa Dean each contributed a goal. Junior Tricia Sullivan and freshman Laura Ambron had one assist each, and sophomore goalie Toby Klein made six saves.
Alvernia will look to their next match-up on Sept. 11th at Washington College to get themselves back above .500.
