Alvernia Evens Up With Win At Mt. St. Vincent

Baker Leads Offense With Four Goals

BOX SCORE

Yonkers, N.Y. (Feb. 28, 2009) - The offense was consistent with two goals in each of the first two quarters and trios in both of the last two, and the defense was improved as Alvernia University (1-1) bettered Mt. St. Vincent College (0-1) Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Mt. St. Vincent.

Alvernia junior Chris Baker (Exeter, Pa./Exeter) led the Crusaders with four goals and was 2-for-2 in faceoffs.  Freshman Dan Hofstetter (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) went 12-for-16 in faceoffs and the team took fewer penalties--seven Saturday after nine in the season opener--and killed off more man-down situations allowing no goals on the disadvantage.

Both teams scored a goal each over the first nine minutes and Hofstetter followed with the last goal of the quarter for a 2-1 lead.  The Alvernia lead hit 4-1 after a pair of goals, but Mt. St. Vincent scored the last of the first half and the first of the second half to pull back within a goal.

Baker then scored three straight goals to close the third quarter giving Alvernia a 7-3 lead with a quarter to play.

Both teams tallied three goals in the fourth quarter leaving Alvernia with the 10-6 win.

Alvernia is off for a week and will face Centenary College next Saturday.
