Alvernia Drops Night Game At Gwynedd

Lower Gwynedd, Pa. (Mar. 10, ,2009) - Alvernia University (1-2) scored a goal late in the first to knot the score at 1-1, but Gwynedd-Mercy (3-2) answered with 10 straight goals in an 11-2 win Tuesday night in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Gwynedd-Mercy.

Alvernia sophomore Ben Stidham (Glen Burnie, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) scored with just over 90 seconds left in a low-scoring first quarter that posted a 1-1 score after 15 minutes, but Alvernia didn't tally again until Stidham assisted freshman Dan Hofstetter (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) with 2:34 left in the game.

The two teams were a combined 0-for-7 on extra man opportunities and the host Griffins held a 10-6 advantage in faceoffs.  GMC also emerged with advantages in ground balls (44-24) and shots (33-14).

Alvernia freshman Eric Jones (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) made nine saves in three quarters, and freshman Kevin Shupp (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) stopped five in the final quarter.  GMC goalies combined for six saves on the night.

Alvernia returns to action Saturday with its home and conference opener against Manhattanville College at 1:00 p.m. at Sovereign Bank Sports Park.
