Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (Mar. 14, 2009) - Alvernia University (5-0, 1-0) scored 14 first-half goals and continued to build on its record for consecutive season-opening victories with a 21-8 win over King's College Saturday afternoon in Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action at King's.
After King's scored to knot the early score at 1-1 Alvernia rattled off nine straight goals to take a 10-1 lead with better than 10 minutes left in the opening half. After another Monarchs' goal Alvernia closed the half with four straight for a 14-2 lead at the break.
Alvernia built its lead to 21-4 with 10 minutes to play and King's scored the final four goals of the game for the 21-8 final.
Alvernia got four goals each from
Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) and
Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Bayard Rustin). Sippel also added one assist. Freshman
Megan Corrigan (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) led the team with seven ground balls.
Alvernia split time in net.
Jennifer Czarnecki (Philadelphia, Pa.) made three saves in the win and
Katie Bostwick (Linwood, Pa.) stopped two.
Alvernia will host Misericordia University in a conference game next Saturday.
