Third Quarter Carries Misericordia To Conference Win

Six Different Crusaders Net Goals

Dallas, Pa. (Mar. 25, 2009) - Alvernia University (1-4, 0-3) found itself tied at the end of the first quarter and down by just two goals at the half, but Misericordia University put up five goals in the third quarter and cruised to a 15-6 win Wednesday evening in Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action at Mangelsdorf Field.

Alvernia got a goal apiece from six different players while the Cougars got a game-high seven from Sean McGuigan.

Alvernia took a 2-1 lead on Dan Hoffstetter's (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh) goal with 8:27 left in the opening quarter and needed Drew Giberson's (Conestoga, Pa./Penn Manor) tally with just under 2:00 on the clock to hit the end of the quarter tied at 3-3.

Alvernia took its second one-goal lead of the game with the first goal in the second quarter, but gave up two to Misericordia before Tim Marcinek (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle) scored to knot the score again, this time at 5-5.

Misericordia then scored the last two goals of the first half and came out with five straight to start the third quarter and the Crusaders didn't threaten the rest of the way.

Alvernia will host Widener University in a conference matchup on Saturday.
