Widener Shuts Out Alvernia

Pride Methodically Notches 17-0 Win

Reading, Pa. (Mar. 28, 2009) - Widener University (3-5, 2-1) scored five goals in the first quarter and added four each in the last three for a 17-0 win over Alvernia University (2-6, 0-4) Saturday afternoon in Middle Atlantic States Collegiate Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action at Sovereign Bank Sports Park.

The Pride got three goals each from Cory Malampy (Ridley, Pa./Ridley) and Steve Cull (Havertown, Pa./Havertown) as 11 different players found the scroing column.  Widener scored the opener just over three minutes into play and Cull closed the first quarter scoring with back-to-back goals assisted by Justin Upp (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) who finished with a team-best four helpers on the day.

Alvernia freshman Kevin Shupp (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) made five saves in the opening half and Eric Jones (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) stopped six in the second half.  Widener split the time in net among four different players who combined for five saves.

Alvernia will continue the conference schedule hosting King's College on Wednesday.
